A Typical Day for a GP

On a typical full day in Surgery a GP will...

  • Conduct 16 telephone consultations  (9 in the morning and 7 in the afternoon) and 11 face to face consultations  (5 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon) - making a total of at least 27 patients per day
  • Make referrals and process actions based on the outcomes of the consultations completed
  • Undertake urgent home visits
  • See patients who have urgent needs
  • Review and take action on test result reports

In addition to the above, these tasks are allocated to our "On the Day" Duty Doctors...

  • Support reception in triaging (review and decide best action) for all incoming appointment requests
  • Respond to urgent telephone contacts from Paramedics and Hospitals
  • Review and process repeat prescription requests
  • Review and take action on clinical documents and reports from Hospitals and Consultants

  • Review and take action on test result reports

  • Support and de-brief GP Registrars

Also during the week our GPs will...

  • Undertake visits to 11 care homes in our local area
  • Undertake training and education
  • Attend clinical meetings
